At Cerberus Volleyball our journey begins with teaching the footwork and biomechanics required for the game of volleyball. Focusing on proper technique in the fundamental skills is key to successful development. Serving, passing, setting and eventually, attacking, blocking, and diving: we are here to build a strong foundation in the game of volleyball.
We start with basic serving and passing footwork, learning to get your body positioned properly to serve and pass the volleyball effectively.
Simultaneously, we work on how to position your upper body while executing different actions required in volleyball: how to pose prior to a serve; how to position your arms while forearm passing or bumping; how to position your hands while setting, and the biomechanical movements required for each of those actions.
Once we have a basic foundation of how to play volleyball on an individual level, we work heavily on team defense, starting with how to defend against a “free-ball”, and shortly after, how to defend against a “roll shot”.
As they start to develop we begin to hone in on individual strengths. We prepare each athlete for a specific position that they enjoy and are likely to succeed in based on their strengths and body type.
Now that we are working on positions, we begin to discuss being “In system” and utilizing all three front row attackers. This brings us to introducing how to defend against an attack from the middle, outside, or opposite attacker.
Once we have reached this point in their development, we feel it’s important athletes understand their roles in service and serve receive, how to “stack” to optimize your positional strengths, and how to effectively put the ball in system. We will also begin the path to serving overhand and build up to different style jump serves, such as a float vs top spin as well as learning more advanced team defense, learning to defend against “middle, outside, and opposite” attacks. We begin to learn how to defend against the 3 quickest possible actions in volleyball: an overpass, a setter dump, and a quick middle attack, also known as a “1”.
Cerberus Volleyball will prepare each athlete for a future in their positions. Whether you are a setter, defensive specialist or libero, middle blocker, opposite hitter, or outside hitter; we will fine-tune each athletes skills within their positions.
Setters and Attackers will have an increased emphasis on various strategic attacks: quick sets & attacks vs high-ball sets & attacks, as well as quick back row sets vs high-ball back row sets. Attackers will have an increased emphasis on swinging, tipping, and blocking. Defensive specialists and liberos will have an increased emphasis on the drive step, dropping a shoulder or bending elbows to improve your passing angle, and diving to dig the volleyball from off of a block, tip or harder attack. Setters will work heavily with liberos on “setter out” strategies and attacker coverage. Middle blockers will join our setter and libero to cover our pin attackers.
From a deep understanding of biomechanics to a deep understanding of volleyball, it’s our mission at Cerberus Sports to build a strong foundation and deep understanding of the game for every athlete that accepts our services.
